WITH THE RECESSION AND THE TERRORIST ATTACKS, INDIA HAS LURCHED FROM disaster to disaster. We may be forgiven for thinking that we have been at the receiving end of outrageous misfortune for quite some time. The much-needed correction in the prices of art works has finally set in but at the cost of the morale of the art community. Hopefully, this will lead to some critical soul-searching amongst art marketeers and artists; and possibly, those who were in the game only to make a fast buck will move on to other pastures.
In this issue, we record a series of conversations with serious contributors to the art scene. Leading artists Rirkrit Tiravanija, Wim Delvoye, Ranbir Kaleka, Sudhir Patwardhan, Jehangir Sabavala, Jitish Kallat, Nataraj Sharma, Shilpa Gupta, Ravi Agarwal, Clare Arni, Mithu Sen, Rashid Rana, Anjana Mehra, Tallur L.N. and Vibha Galhotra; collectors Frank Cohen and Amrita Jhaveri; and critic/curator Gayatri Sinha speak about their inspirations and initiatives. Many of them look back at their eventful journeys. We also carry more than twenty-five long and short reviews along with special reports and other pieces in this combo issue.
Do let me know what you think of it.
Wishing you a productive, healthy and successful year ahead.
Warm Regards,
- Abhay Sardesai
