The JSW Prize for Contemporary Craftsmanship powered by AD is a unique prize that seeks out individuals, organizations, schools or even entire villages that are contributing to a new conversation on craftsmanship in India. Paying equal attention to the work of the karigar (craftsman), the material they work with, the Prize also looks at where design intersects their work. This can either be their own designs or collaborations with contemporary designers. The Prize seeks to celebrate modern objects made using the finest traditional craft, with the aim of preserving the craft for future generations. The Prize for the winning entry is Eleven hundred thousand rupees. Over the next 12 months, following the award, the winner will create a “masterpiece of craft” – an exceptional object of both contemporary design and craftsmanship that will be showcased in the Karigar Pavilion at the AD Design Show in 2020.
