George Martin P. J. Conflicts and Dualities (Detail). Mixed Media. 2005.

Nature and Art have often been spoken of as opposites. The paradox however is that one experiences life with greater intensity through works of art. I have always found honest and socially/spiritually engaged works of art - paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, performances - possessing the power to communicate, to reach out and touch, to illuminate, and even to heal.

The best of art and literature helps us understand how all of us can respond to crises, can draw from a common inspirational font, and surmount difficulties: holding expressive worlds describing pain and pleasure, happiness and sadness, life and death, great works help us get in touch with some of the larger truths.

I wish all our readers the strength to come to terms with their weaknesses, the fortitude to bear losses, the courage to stand up to challenges, and finally, the patience to appreciate destiny's design: in other words, the composure to understand God's great art. Every event that halts you in your tracks may well turn out to be the event that makes you begin your life afresh. Have a positive approach and a miracle is bound to happen.
